The Challenge

Where does a project integrator go when faced with the challenge of needing to propose a complex optical fibre TV distribution system feeding over 350 TV sets in a retirement village?  In addition, time was short and there was only detailed information and drawings about the layout and scope of the premises, which were yet to be constructed.

This was the question facing On The Button Pty Ltd, an Adelaide Integration Company who was attempting to bid for an optical fibre TV distribution system being planned by Southern Cross Homes for their new retirement home at Noarlunga, south of Adelaide.  Fortunately for the Matikulas brothers, owners of On The Button Pty Ltd, they sought the expertise of Hills Antenna & TV Systems.

Without pit and pipe drawings or a detailed and dimensioned site layout, Hills Antenna & TV Systems was able to construct a notional specification and quotation from the scant information that had been provided, with sufficient flexibility to allow for variations as more design information was finalised and became available.

A fully detailed proposal was prepared within 2 days and, after on-time submission to Southern Cross Homes, On The Button Pty Ltd was selected for their first major fibre optical distribution project.

Technical Solution

As this was the first major project for On The Button using an Astro QAM headend and Hills fibre optic equipment, training on the technology and equipment was paramount to ensuring the success of the project.

Hills provided the necessary formal training for the integrators, covering the Astro QAM headend, as well as the optical fibre distribution system.  In addition to training, Hills provided the systems design, equipment and after sales service.  After all of the site details were finalised, the first phase of the project was completed under budget.

Whilst Hills doesn’t provide on site commissioning assistance, there is a support network of consultants and experts available through Hills who can lend any such assistance, if required.  This support proved invaluable to the Maitkulas brothers as they worked through the usual teething problems and successfully commissioned the overall TV distribution system.

The Outcome

With equipment, training and support from Hills Antenna & TV Systems, On The Button successfully completed the first phase of this complicated project.  When Southern Cross Homes decided to tender the second phase of the project, the proven track record gained by the Integrators during the first phase was invaluable in securing their success for the on-going business.

The Matikulas brothers are now looking forward to applying their capabilities with high end MATV systems and optical fibre TV distribution to future projects, as the opportunities become available.
